Biking Day 7: Alligator Burger

By Gaz under Travel

Gary's Gator Burger

Today we rode a little over 160 miles from Glenpool (nr. Tulsa) to El Reno (Oklahoma) with a lunch break at the Route 66 Rock Cafe (not to be confused with the Hard Rock Cafe) in Stroud. The Rock Cafe was purpose built over 3 years practically single handedly by a local entrepreneur using local rocks dug out to make room for Route 66, which he bought for $5! It opened for business in 1939 and has been a popular Route 66 tourist trap ever since.

The service was excellent, the staff were delightful, and the food was delicious. I had the alligator burger (no really!), which as you can see I enjoyed immensely. The bill for lunch was $13.13, which might be a sign. Is eating an alligator bad karma? Perhaps I should stay away from Florida just in case…

[...] Rock Cafe @ Stroud After leaving Tulsa we headed towards El Reno, west of Oklahoma City. Here’s Gaz outside the Rock Cafe in Stroud. We stopped here for a coffee and a bite to eat. I had a chilli burger, while Gaz had an alligator burger. If you look at his blog you will see a picture of him chowing down the mighty burger… ( the food was excellent and the staff were friendly too This was one of our most memorable pit stops, and it’s everything you’d expect to see on the Route 66. The cafe was built back in 1939 by Roy Rieves. [...]
