Double Tax on Flights from England

Reading Lorelle VanFossen’s other blog, I’m dismayed to learn that the British government has introduced another unfair taxation upon the unsuspecting British consumer. As frequent flyers, an additional £80 every time Octavia and I leave the country is no joke. That would be around a 15% increase in the cost of flying to America for us.

Britain already has the highest travel costs in the EU, with a government that lies to us about the rate of inflation, and keeps finding new ways to take away the money we try to earn. I find myself with fewer reasons to like my home country every day. Sadly, we are renowned for our apathy when it comes to speaking out about politics. And there’s no constitution to protect our rights.

Despite all this, there is an easy loophole: By choosing carriers that fly via Europe, I can save £60 of that tax by changing in Frankfurt or Munich, and taking the actual long haul flight from there. I wonder if this will catch on? It will certainly have a big impact on revenue for long haul flights for British airlines…
