Week of Martial Arts

By Gaz under Martial Arts

Martial ArtistHaving had only a few days to settle back into being in England again, the last week has comprised a thoroughly punishing schedule. From Monday to Friday, I delivered the greater portion of a course on Apache Security. At the best of times I find being the centre of attention for a class full of delegates while I try to be witty and charming for 8 hours a day is pretty exhausting. Receiving the notes just the night before presenting them each day used up every last remaining moment of my free time… excepting 6 or 7 hours to sleep, a 3 hour daily commute, and an hour for eating of course ;-)

Now that it is all over for another month, and I am living in Gloucester until the Autumn, I’ve decided that I need to get back into some martial arts training, having rather neglected my fitness while traveling around America for the last 5 months. At the moment, one of my motorcycles is in a warehouse in LA, the other is in a friend’s garage in another county, and I sold my car to my younger brother last year, so driving to one of my Tae Kwon-Do schools is not an option.

In order to qualify for my GTI 4th Dan grading I need to attend several pregradings, many of which happen while I am out of the country, and I need to earn my Instructors’ Certificate which can take several months with the best will in the world. Instead of expending a lot of time and effort chasing that belt, I’ve decided instead to broaden my horizons by taking advantage of one of the many martial arts taught at the local GL1 Leisure Centre. Each night this week, I’ll attend one of the classes on offer, with an eye to choosing my favourite and training in that style until I leave the country again in the Autumn.

Stay tuned to my blog for reviews of each class I attend throughout the rest of the week.
