Technorati Blog Reactions
Technorati seems to have gone plumb crazy in the last few weeks. I first noticed something wierd when johnchow.com posts began appearing as if they were each separate blogs, but that was good for my ranking since it appeared to Technorati as if I had links from several blogs. Then, my On Being A Dot Com Mogul review of John’s site became a blog of its own in technorati, which seemed pretty wierd, but effectively increased my ranking again.
This morning I noticed that several of my posts had received multiple “blog reactions” according to the Technorati javascript I was running in each post’s metadata, but when I clicked through to see what they were, I just got lists of my own posts where I had cross-linked in the Related Articles sections. I’d been on the fence about how much this script was slowing down page loads for my site for a while, but now that the Blog Reactions are in effect just random numbers I’ve removed them altogether.
I’m also wondering whether the Technorati rating system is at all accurate anymore? I suppose I could artificially game my own ranking by adding more links between each of my posts and wait for Technorati to turn some of them into separate blogs inside its database, which makes me believe plenty of people will have followed through on that same thought. So my ranking is as much a factor of how much I’m prepared to game the system by comparison to the people with higher ranks than me… that pretty much renders Technorati useless in my eyes. I’ll leave my blog in the system simply for the traffic Technorati sends my way, but I’m no longer going to pay any attention to the ranking numbers.
Bleh!
