Groundhog Resolution Review Day

By Gaz under Personal Growth

groundhog.pngWhat the hell am I talking about, you might ask? David Seah explains, first of all, the whys and wherefores of making Groundhog Day Resolutions, and then goes on to review his progress in today’s GHD Resolution Review Day 2 post.

Essentially, rather than being a sheep and trying to make resolutions on New Years Day when we’re worn out from excesses of the Holidays, Dave extolls the virtues of making resolutions on Groundhog Day (2/2), and then to check our progress on 3/3, 4/4 and so on.

Well, no more! This year, I plan to make a late, 2 month and 2 day late start at Groundhog Day Resolutions. Obviously I can’t review them yet, since I haven’t made a resolution in more years than I care to remember. Instead, I’m stating my resolutions here in public, which is sure to encourage me to keep to them as best as I can.

1. Keep a regular morning routine

After an excellent start to my early rising habit, I’ve let my day drift too far into the night again: sleeping between 1am and 8am rather than the 12am to 6am (or earlier) I’ve been hoping for. I think the worst culprit here is letting my morning routine slack. As of tomorrow, when my alarm goes off at 6am, I’ll get up and launch into my morning routine.

2. Read a book every week

This one is strongly linked to my morning routine. I’ve let the habit of reading for the last hour or so of the day slip to catch up the time lost the previous morning, and thus begins a vicious circle. I’m going to read tonight, and every night from now and try to complete a book every week — preferably at least 4 books by the next review day 5/5.

3. Set aside time for martial arts

I fell off the wagon while riding across America last year, which punched a 5 month hole in my previous twice a week schedule. I’ve joined the local Wing Chun Kuen which takes care of one night per week, but I need to either train at home or travel to Cheltenham for a second night each week to maintain my fitness. I’m going to fit some complementary stretching and anaerobic exercise into my morning routine from tomorrow too.

4. At least 2 blog posts per week

I’m not a problogger (yet!), and anything more will eat too much of the time I need to put food on the table, so I’m going for a conservative 2 posts, though that is the bare minimum I’ll be happy with. Since October, I’ve managed to get into a good flow with blogging, and it’s great writing practice for me.

5. Weekly Reviews

I’m doing pretty good at GTD, but I’ve only managed 1 weekly review since I started using the system last Summer. This really throws a spanner in the works of my otherwise productive system, so I’m going to make a full weekly review every Sunday from now on.

All of these are measurable, and I’ll keep tally of how I’m performing and shame myself with the results in a month and a day! Why not give it a try yourself?
