Melbourne Beach

Down to our last two and half weeks on this side of the Atlantic for a while, and enjoying the company of Tave’s cousin Megan for a week, we’re going all out to see as much as we can in Florida before we leave.

I’m not much for the beach myself (I can’t swim; I like the shade; and there’s only so much sitting in the sand I can do before I get bored) so Tave hasn’t really had as much beach time as she might have liked. So, to redress the balance a little yesterday, the three of us set off in the late afternoon after the hottest part of the day, and rode 65 miles along the SR-192 back roads to Melbourne Beach.

At the intersection with I-95 there is an airboat ride company, where we’d planned to spend half an hour on the intercoastal lakes, powered by a huge V8 engine driving a fan. But, not arriving until around 5pm, it was already fully booked for the last part of the day, and we had to make do with an ice cold beer on the porch before riding the last 8 miles to the beach.

We spent the last few hours of daylight on the shore, and you can see some pictures of the girls being hit by the choppy waves at Tave’s blog. It’s a pity that on the East coast, the sun sets behind you as you look out to sea… we’ll certainly have to make it over to the West coast at sunset before our time is up…

To cap off a lovely day out, riding back in the cool dusk air was a real treat, especially the middle section of SR-192 on the map above, with nothing but lakes and palm trees (and maybe a few gators!) for several miles in any direction.
